Almourol Castle
Built on top of a small, craggy island at the foot of the Tagus river, Almourol Castle is one of the most visited monuments in the region. Located in Vila Nova da Barquinha, it was rebuilt in 1171, by Gualdim Pais, a Templar master, and was part of the defensive line of the Tagus.
It consists of an irregular polygonal wall, with 10 observation points, mostly semicircular, called turrets or towers, which exceed the height of the wall, accentuating the monumentality of the castle. The presence of inscriptions on tombstones stands out and immortalize Gualdim Pais origins and accomplishments. It is also known for its natural surroundings of great beauty and a mystical and romantic atmosphere that makes it a mandatory stop on a Templar route along the Middle Tagus.
